Kurdish Kurmanji Course at SOAS

School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS)-University of London offers a one-year course in beginners' spoken and written Kurdish-Kurmanji, at SOAS Language Centre in London. If you are interested in learning Kurdish, please register now. The Kurdish language class will start in October . This is a one-year course with three 10-week terms. At least 6 people needed to have Kurdish beginners' language class. 3 students have alr...eady registered for the course. 3 people needed to have Kurdish beginners' language class at a one of the important British universities. Kurdish language teacher, Mr Tari Ahmet, has published several Kurdish grammar books and he also taught Kurdish language last year at SOAS.

At present lessons are offered in the evenings and at the beginners level (two hours per week between 6:30-8:30 or 7:00-9:00 depending on the students' preference), but it is hoped that SOAS will initiate a second course at intermediate level in not a too distant future.

Description

The aim of the course is to provide a thorough introduction to contemporary Kurdish. By the end of the course, students will have covered basic grammatical constructions and acquired an essential working vocabulary allowing them to communicate within a limited range of situations in which learners are likely to find themselves. The language is presented together with the cultural context in which it is used so that learners are able to appreciate such things as appropriateness and linguistic etiquette when interaction takes place in the target language.

Method

The course is taught in English and Kurdish with coverage of the four skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing, and a balance between communicative activities, structure practice and grammar. Class size is limited to twelve to allow for close involvement.
