Thirty four women killed in domestic violence in August

At least thirty four women were killed as a result of domestic violence in August 2010 in Turkey, Dicle News Agency reported.

According to DIHA's statistics 34 women were killed by husband, spouse, partner or a related man in August 2010 alone.

Here are list of some of the victims:

* Ruzhat Alkan (48), Sevgi Aslan (22): Sebahattin Alkan chocked his wife Ruzhat and daughter Sevgi to death while they were sleeping in Istanbul. He said that he saw Ruzhat, and Sevgi naked in his dream and killed them for that.

* A 13 year old girl, Hazal Esmeral, was shot dead in her home in Istanbul. The police couldn't find any clues about the murder.

* A hotel manager killed his partner and daughter by stabbing 64 times in Ankara. The murderer, Ali Yasar Civigil told the police that he went mad when he heard about his partners infidelity.

* Mehmet Basturk (30) killed his wife after she said that she wants a divorce in Eskisehir. Mediha Basturk (19) was holding her 2 year old baby when her husband stabbed him.

* A woman was killed by her husband for the same reason again in Eskisehir. Nevin Ozturk was stabbed 10 times and bled to death.

* A plumber stabbed a 60 year old woman lawyer in Bodrum. She died a few days later.

* A eighty-five year old man killed his daughter-in-law by stabbing her more than thirty times in Antalya.

* Tulin Kok (42) was stabbed while she was going to work by a man who she refused to have a relation before in Aydin.

The government's "Domestic Violence against Women in Turkey" report shows gender violence is common in Turkey. Four out of 10 women in Turkey are beaten by their husbands and one out of three women are subjected to sexual abuse.
