Ismail Abdi arrested trying to leave Syria

Human Rights Organization in Syria – MAF and the Kurdish Organization for Defending Human Rights and Public Freedoms in Syria – DAD report that Ismail Abdi was arrested by the security forces in Syria on 23 August 2010, and has since disappeared in the Syrian detention system. He is a lawyer, and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights and Public Freedoms in Syria.
Ismail Abdi was born on 1 January 1960 in the province of Hasaka. He is married and has four sons. Ismail has been a resident in Germany since 1997, and became a German citizen in 2007. He was visiting his family in Syria, and was arrested while in Aleppo Airport on his way back to Germany. His wife and children were allowed to travel back to Germany but Ismail was detained by security forces on behalf of state security in Qamishli. The authorities have withheld information of his whereabouts and any charges being brought against him.
