Statement on 48th Anniversary of Extraordinary discrimination against Kurds in Syrian
On October 05, 1962 Syrian authorities randomly and arbitrary divided more than hundred thousand Kurds in two categories:
1- Registered records called “Foreign Records Hasakah Governorate”
2-None registered in any formal records called “Maktomi”
Fast forwarding, today the number of victims of this extraordinary unfair racial policy by the Syrian Ba’ath regime has reached more than 300,000. These victims are banned from exercising their civil, social, economical, cultural, and political rights. They are denied the opportunity to be employed, attend school, own a home, and participate in any public life. This unjust policy has caused these people to endure a long chronic suffering, where they live in constant poverty and feel alienated and homeless in their own ancestral homeland.
Forty eight years has passed now and yet these Kurds in Syria continue to be denied a nationality. The Syrian authorities have abandoned the possibility of correcting this unjust policy, and insist in ignoring to address the negative impacts of these painful and discriminatory policies these victims have endured. The regime is in clear violation of the article 15 of the Universal Declaration of Human Right of 10 December 1948 which provides that everyone shall have the right to a nationality.
We at the Kurdish National Congress of North America call upon all political actors, civil and human rights organizations and personalities for their solidarity with the Kurdish victims in Syria. We appeal to the international community to intervene and pressure the Syrian regime to grant these victims with their citizenship and compensate them for the suffering and deprivation for many years.
