Noam Chomsky in Turkey for gathering on freedom of expression

Chomsky's book "American Interventionism" was published in Turkish and his publisher was sued

World known linguistic scientist, activist and writer Prof. Dr. Noam Chomsky will be in Turkey on October 8. He is indeed the honour guest of the 7th Gathering on Freedom of Expression. Prof. Noam Chomsky. Chomsky, whose recent talk in Israel was prevented, came to Turkey in 2002 as a guest of the Initiative for Freedom of Expression. He attended the first hearing of the case against the publisher of his book “American Interventionism” and told the court he as the author was supposed to be tried under the Penal Code and wanted to be tried instead of the publisher. However State Security Court acquitted the publisher in 15 minutes preventing further scandal.

Delegates of international organisations that are participants are being confirmed. Norwegian author Eugene Schoulgin who is also International Secretary of PEN International will pass his position at PEN to someone else shortly before the gathering. He will however be with us at the gathering since he has done since 2000.

to attend the meeting for freedom of expression. At the same time, he will appear at the Kadıköy 2nd Penal Court for Instance to observe the hearing of journalists Ertuğrul Mavioğlu and Ahmet Şık because of their books.
