Kurdish officials deny talks on permanent U.S. military bases

19 August 2010

A peshmerga spokesman denied talks with United States on establishing permanent military bases in Federal Kurdistan region.

"There is not, to my knowledge, any talk about establishing permanent American military bases in Kurdistan Region nor in Iraq too." Major General Jabbar Jawhir said.

He also stressed that Washington wishes to strengthen its relations with Arbil diplomatically and not militarily.

Last week Assistant US Secretary of State Jeffrey Feltman called Kurds "strategic partner" after a meeting with Federal Kurdistan Region's president Maasoud Barzani.

This statement caused speculations about U.S. intentions to build a military base inside Kurdistan region.
