Kurdish politician called for reducing the election threshold

18 August 2010

Ahmet Türk calls on Prime Minister to address the issue of lowering the threshold

Co-chair of Democratic Society Congress (DTK) and former chair of the banned Democratic Society Party (DTP) Ahmet Türk said they consider PM Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s referendum meeting in Diyarbakir important. “If the PM gives a message about lowering the 10% threshold for the elections it will be good.” added Türk.

Speaking to a Turkish news channel NTV Ahmet Türk emphasised that the unilateral cease fire declared by the PKK is very important and it gives the opportunity to everyone in order to review their approaches. Türk also said it is obvious that the problem cannot be solved through military operations or weapons and a formula which will fasten the Kurdish and Turkish peoples together should be found.

Regarding the elections Ahmet Türk said 10% threshold is the biggest obstacle in front of being a party of not only the Kurds but whole Turkey and if the threshold is reduced there will be Turks who will stand in the election from their party.

Underlining the situation of the imprisoned Kurdish mayors Ahmet Türk said while people are making fuss for the defendants in Ergenekon case nobody is paying attention on the imprisoned mayors who have been waiting almost for a year and half to appear before a court. He also added that they are expecting the PM to make an explanation concerning this issue in the meeting to be held in Diyarbakir.

Ahmet Türk also added that UN can play a role in the solution as the Kurdish problem is affecting not only Turkey but all Middle East.
