According to Kurdish Organization for Defending Human Rights and Public Freedoms in Syria – DAD and Media Institute of West Kurdistan Society, the family of Kurdish conscript Mustafa Abdo, born in 1982, from Marja village in the Deyrick area, received the body of their son on Thursday, 12 August 2010. He was doing his military service in the Syrian army in a military unit stationed in the province of Homs.
Mustafa Abdo joined the service four months ago, and one of the officers told his family that he was accidentally killed by a bullet out of his own weapon while on duty which led to his death. Another conscript has said that the bullet that hit Mustapha Abdo was not from his own weapon. These conflicting stories arise in the absence of transparency by military officials responsible for dealing with the lives of Syrian soldiers.
The death of Mustafa Abdo brings the number of Kurds who have been killed during this year in mysterious circumstances to six young men. In 2009, seventeen Kurdish conscripts died in similar circumstances. None of these deaths have been investigated. This phenomenon is frightening the parents of Kurdish soldiers performing their military service in the Syrian army, as they fear for the fate of their children. Recruits expect to be in a safe place while they perform their obligatory service in the Syrian army!!!
