Kurdish immigrant flees from Australian detention center

A Kurdish detainee escaped from an immigration detention center in Australia's Christmas Island. A search is underway to find him by Australian police.

An unnamed Kurdish immigrant dug a small tunnel under the fence and sneaked to the jungle Australian officials said.

A headcount early this morning confirmed someone was missing, and detainees were locked down in their compounds while officers spent hours searching for the missing man.

There is only one settlement in the island and the detainee has to walk about 20 kilometers through a thick jungle to get there.

Australia puts illegal immigrants to detention centers build in a number of islands before deportation.

Human Rights Organizations are highly critical of Australia's immigration policy of isolating and detaining immigrants who enters Australia illegally.
