Iraqi Prime Minister closes two military academies

Doors of the well-known Qalachwalan and Zakho academies soon to be closed

Sulaymania- The Iraqi Prime Minister, Nuri al-Maliki, has ordered the closure of Qalachwalan and Zakho military colleges, according to officials. The decision will take effect in the beginning of 2010.

Qalachwalan military academy is located in nearby Sulaimaniya city and has for several years served in bringing up a new generation of military officers. Zkhao military academy is located in Zakho city in Duhok province.

Jabar Yawar, spokesperson for the Ministry of Peshmarga said that after the closure of those academies, two new institutions will be established.

Prime Minister al-Maliki is also the Commander-in-Chief of the Iraqi army and has authority to issue such an order.

Students of the academies will be transferred to Baghdad to continue their studies, the source says.
