Erbil – Often Iranian artillery fires at the borders of the Kurdistan region. Iran says this is because of armed groups in Iraqi Kurdistan.
After the 1991 uprising in Kurdistan region of Iraq and especially after the collapse of Saddam’s regime in 2003, the border regions have been bombed from time to time by Iran. This has led to fears among Kurdish officials and problems between the Iranian and Kurdish government.
An anonymous source from the Kurdish officials in the Iranian parliament, says the existence of armed groups, such as PJAK, Komala and KDP-I are the reason for these problems. The Kurdish government has criticized the bombardments.
Bukhari Abdullah, the Iraqi PM on the Kurdistan coalition list, informed “the bombardment is violating Iraq’s sovereignty. That’s why it’s expected that the Iraqi government and Maliki will take the necessary steps”.
The Kurdish deputies in the Iranian parliament asked Iranian defense ministry to stop the bombarding of the Kurdistan region, but at the same time asked Kurdish officials to prevent the entrance of armed forces into Iranian Kurdistan (Photo: Rudaw).
