Europian Human Right court: Made Kurdishn Assimilation legal

02-02-2010

Brussels - In its second ruling Tuesday, the European court found Turkey’s policy of not permitting the use of non-Turkish characters such as “x,” w” and “q” to be legal reports Hurriyet.

MM. Kemal Taşkın, Medeni Alpkaya, Abdulkadir Fırat, Doğan Genç, Emin Anğ, Celalettin Yöyler, Emir Ali Şimşek and Reşit Sünbül had filed the complaint in 2003 with the court, saying they were being discriminated against by not being allowed to use Kurdish letters in official documents.

The defendants had cited foreigners married to Turkish citizens and companies operational in Turkey that were allowed to use non-Turkish characters in official documents.

Saying that many European countries do not allow the use of certain characters and letters, the court ruled that Turkey has not violated any regulation in this regard. The rulings of the European court are binding and must be implemented.
