TURKEY: A STEP BACK FROM DEMOCRACY

GUE/NGL group shows solidarity with Kurdish democrats - "With the recent banning of the Demokratik Toplum Partisi (DTP), Turkey has suppressed a democratically-legitimised negotiating partner on the Kurdish side. A peaceful solution of the Kurdish conflict is now again a distant prospect", explains GUE/NGL President Lothar Bisky.

Bisky continues: "Now we face the risk of the further radicalisation of the Kurdish question. The latest banning of the DTP by the Turkish Constitutional Court is another chapter in a long history of reppressions against democratic movements in Turkey. Banning a democratic party, issuing arbitrary judgements, and suppressing Kurdish identity moves Turkey away from, rather than closer to, the EU. We repeat: Dialogue and understanding, not confrontation and repression, is the only hope for an enduring and peaceful answer to the Kurdish question."
