On 10 December 2009, lecturer Shafi Burhani was taken in for questioning by Mahabad Intelligence Service, there is still no news about his condition of detention and his whereabouts.
The intelligence ministry has not made clear the reason for the detention of Mamosta Burhani but it has been said that his detention has political and religious motives.
Mamosta Shafi Burhani is a well-known religious figure in Kurdistan and has a PhD in theology.
He teaches Arabic language and literature at Azad University in Mahabad.
