Singer, composer and instrumentalist, Delil Dilanar is a maverick in the Kurdish music world. While his young contemporaries have turned to various forms of popular Kurdish musical expressions, he defied hasty and fashionable adaptations and instead turned to the rich musical roots only mastered by very few experienced elders. He picked the very difficult music style of bards (Dengbeji), under the tutelage of his father and uncle, a musical style in which the vocalist enacts multiple roles: storyteller, musician, historian and a linguist simultaneously. This style has both musical and literary value encoded in ancient ballads, lyrics of love, and epic songs accompanied by traditional instruments. Delil is a skillful musician as he plays Kurdish melodies on several instruments as davul, kaval and percussions as preludes or to accompany his witty, sweet and soulful songs about the life of his people.

Delil’s powerful voice wafts across national boundaries as it reverberates in the mountains, gorges, across rivers, and lakes of his troubled homeland, from which he had to flee to take refuge in Germany since 1999.

Despite his young age, Delil is now the mainstay on the Kurdish classical music with prolific productions. He has produced four solo-albums and been working on new albums for other prominent Kurdish artists such as Nizamettin Aric, Aynur Dogan and Mikail Aslan. His performances have earned rave reviews in Europe, Germany, in particular. He has also co-performed in concert with other folk musicians and bands professionally. However, his musical style transcends contemporary Kurdish musical traditions with his quest for and revival of stylistic variations of Dengbeji ballads ranging from, epic (lawiks), melancholic (heyrans), joyful (dilok/ narink), to religious (lawje) ballads. Delil, accompanied by a quartet of musicians, will also be joined by Nidar and the Kurdish Dance Group who have been featured in different festivals and cultural events.

It is not merely the great wealth of his verbal, vocal, and instrumental repertoires that makes Delil’s music so vividly expressive and forceful. His musical style constantly shifts in its genres, colors, themes, and contours, now as a quiet creek, then as a torrent. His songs with their exceptional musical versatility, rich oral history, and narrative poetry all blend into a smooth and seamless flow of language, culture, and history. It is no wonder that the World Music has called him “The Rising Star of Kurdish music”.
