Brussels - The Kurdish politician Leyla Zana will meet the President of the European parliament today. Zana, who won the EP Sakharov Prize for the freedom of thought is visiting Brussels for a conference about Turkey and the Kurds organized by the EUTCC. She will hold the opening speech on Wednesday, together with other prominent Kurdish politicians from Turkey. Thursday she will meet European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek together with the European Parliament's Political Groups Chairs and/or their representatives. During the meeting they will discuss the general political situation in Turkey and the rights of the Kurds, and also the recent arrests of Kurdish politicians and court cases against them. Leyla Zana was banned from joining any political party the next five years by the Constitutional Court of Turkey. The banning followed the closure of the Democratic Society's Party (DTP). The decision was imposed on 37 leading DTP members, among them the party's prominent chairman Ahmet Türk who will also speak at the EUTCC conference. © Rudaw
