Opposition movement becomes political party

19-01-2010

Slemani - Muhammad Tofiq Rahim, a leader of the Kurdish opposition movement Gorran (Change), confirmed told Rudaw that they have asked the Ministry of Interior to register the movement as a political party.

In an interview with Rudaw, Rahim rejected the reports published by the media of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan that claim thousands of Gorran supporters have returned to PUK.

Rahim said that the movement will continue to operate politically and for that they have seeking permission from the Ministry of Interior to give them official license.

Following the movement's victory in Sulaimaniya province in the July elections by wining more votes than their rival PUK, the former Kurdistan Regional Government's prime minister, Nechirvan Barzani, said in interviews that Gorran Movement has become a reality and they have to respect that. Rahim described Nechirvan Barzani's observation on Gorran as "logical".

"I've heard his views on KNN, and they are logical. If a human thinks logically, they must think on those lines and work with realities, and the reality is there is a thing by the name of Gorran movement and they have 25 seats in Kurdish parliament," Rahim added (Photo: Rudaw).
