KHRAG TO LAUNCH INTERNATIONAL SIGNATURE CAMPAIGN

FOR THE RELEASE OF ABDULLAH OCALAN AT THE

CAPE TOWN FESTIVAL

On Human Rights Day 21 March 2010 at 3pm, which is also the day on which the Kurdish people celebrate Newroz which in the Kurdish language means “New Day”, the first day of spring, the Kurdish Human Rights Actions Group, in Cape Town, South Africa will be launching the One Million Signatures Campaign for the release of Abdullah Ocalan, the imprisoned leader of the Kurdish people, at the Cape Town Festival.

The Festival celebrates the achievements of Capetonians in bringing together various cultures that have historically had a home in the Mother City. Whilst every year on 21st March in all parts, hamlets, villages, towns, cities of Kurdistan as well as in the Diaspora (around the world), Kurds gather to show their unity, joy and sorrow and their need for freedom and democracy. The largest gathering is in the North-Kurdistani city of Amed (Diyarbakir) where over a million people gather to celebrate Newroz.

As part of this year’s celebration on Human Rights Day (21 March 2010) and Newroz, various cultures that Cape Town has been privileged to host will come together to remember those whose Human Rights are still being violated around the World.

Since 1997 the South African Kurdish Human Rights Action Group (KHRAG) has been engaged in seeking peace, human rights and democracy for the Kurdish people in Turkey.

The struggles of the South African and the Kurdish peoples are not dissimilar. The South African people have attained their objective. The Kurdish people are still struggling to achieve their rights.

In Kurdistan, Abdullah Ocalan has been instrumental in the struggle for the rights of the Kurdish people in the same way as Nelson Mandela fought for the rights of the South African people.

Today, KHRAG calls on all peace loving people around the World, and particularly in South Africa, to show their support and solidarity for the Rights of the Kurdish people and to demand the immediate release of Abdullah Ocalan.

Supporting this campaign will be a significant way of celebrating Newroz and Human Rights Day 2010. Join the campaign by signing the attached petition.
