Iraqi nationals in diaspora took part in their national election on 05, 06 and 07 of March 2010 in the UK. Some Iraqi nationals did not have any Iraqi documents to prove they were from Iraq but had British passports and Home Office documents which clearly stated they were from Iraq.

However, the Independent High Electoral Commission - Iraq decided not to allow these people to vote. When all negotiations failed to resolve this issue, Iraqi Kurds in London protested, as they were disproportionately affected compared to Iraqi Arabs.

The police intervened to stop the protest and this led to the arrest of up to 40 Iraqi Kurds. Among those arrested were election observers.
